About
Mariah Amani Buckles (born October 27, 1997), best known by her stage name Mariah the Scientist, is an American recording artist. After signing a deal with Tory Lanez’s label, One Umbrella, along with RCA Records, she released her debut album Master in 2019 and her second studio album, Ry Ry World, in 2021. She switched to Epic Records to release her third studio album titled To Be Eaten Alive, which became her first appearance on the Billboard 200 chart.
Her singles for 2025, “Burning Blue” and “Is It a Crime” (featuring Kali Uchis), were the first to appear on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching a position in the top 30. Both came before her fourth studio album, Hearts Sold Separately (2025).
Early life
Buckles was an early graduate from Southwest DeKalb High School, having graduated one year ahead of schedule, and then joined St. John’s University in New York in order to study to be a pediatric anesthesiologist. However, after completing her second year of college studies, Buckles quit school to start her career in music, telling her mother about it but no one else.
Career beginnings and Master
Not long after graduating high school, she was discovered by Canadian artist Tory Lanez and soon found herself touring with him, as she developed her music and worked towards releasing her first studio album.[5] She released her first EP titled To Die For that features six tracks through SoundCloud in January 2018. Lanez played the part of her mentor in her musical career. She signed to Lanez’ record label, One Umbrella, as well as RCA Records in February 2019. She released her first album, Master, featuring ten songs on both labels on August 23, 2019. Executive produced by Lanez, her debut single “Beetlejuice” featured on NPR’s Heat Check weekly playlist in August 2019,[11] with the visual for “Reminders” premiering on Complex on August 21, 2019.
2020–2021: Ry Ry World
Her tour dates in the year 2020 comprised performances at Coachella, Primavera Sound, and Pitchfork Music Festival. The single titled “RIP” was released on 22nd May, 2020. Following the release of this single, she dropped another one titled “Always n Forever”, accompanied by Lil Baby on July 30th, 2020. Prior to releasing her second studio album, she released the last two singles that would precede the album. These two singles were titled “2 You” released on June 18th, 2021 and “Aura” released on July 2nd, 2021 respectively. The Ry Ry World, her second studio album, was released on July 16th, 2021.
Artistry
OutKast and Frank Ocean have been listed by Buckles among her songwriting inspirations. The lyrics in her music are also greatly shaped by her childhood, which she spent with her realistic father. Her music is quite pragmatic since she sees things the way they are in her relationships with men. Her style of art has been inspired by Michael Jackson, Prince, and Whitney Houston because of their clear visions in their performances.
Personal life
In the year 2021, there were rumors floating around about a love affair between Buckles and Young Thug; the news was later confirmed after Young Thug’s imprisonment, with Buckles spotted going to court sessions and shouting “Free Thugger” during her performances. Buckles and Thug broke up in October 2025, only to rekindle their romance in December 2025 during a show in Atlanta.
